The BYUN Approach to Gluteal Augmentation
Buttock Implants are flawed in many ways. Any time something foreign is placed inside the body, one’s body is prone to reject it. Implants can come with infection, rejection, and shifting. Implants should be placed under the muscle to avoid the creation of a seroma. (A seroma is a common complication of gluteal implant procedures. Seromas are an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid inside of a capsule or space created by the body in defense of implant placement.) Even if implants are placed under the muscle to avoid a seroma, there’s going to be a size limitation.
Natural Butt Enhancement Without Implants
Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is a procedure which involves extracting fat from an area of the patient’s body (namely the stomach, hips, or flanks) and injecting it into the buttocks to enhance its prominence and projection. This procedure has quickly become mainstream, but has even more downfalls than implants. In October 2019, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) issued a warning to British plastic surgeons regarding the safety of the Brazilian Butt Lift. Most recently, it has been discovered that post BBL procedures, patients are suffering from many complications that range from lumpiness to debilitation and even death. Over time, fat cells both grow to dominate an area and shrink/calcify. This fate of fat cells creates a lumpy, bumpy appearance in areas that are supposed to be smooth. During these procedures, surgical instruments can easily puncture through blood vessels, if fat cells are injected to the damaged area, a fat embolism could result and cause serious injury or even death. A task force made up of plastic surgeons from international societies reported that the death rate is as high as one in 3,000 procedures — the highest of any cosmetic surgery procedure. Other potential complications of a Brazilian Butt Lift include bacterial infection, tissue death, scarring, and abscesses.
The BAAPS announced they will launch a formal review of new evidence into the safety and techniques used in Brazilian Butt Lift surgery.
What Is Butt Augmentation with the BYUN Technique?
Butt augmentation using the BYUN technique is a body contouring approach designed to enhance the shape, projection, and balance of the buttocks using the patient’s own tissue whenever possible. The goal is to create natural-looking curves that harmonize with the waist, hips, and overall body proportions.
Rather than relying on implants alone, this method focuses on structural reshaping and contour optimization to achieve a more lifted, rounded, and proportionate silhouette.
Natural Butt Enhancement Without Implants
Many patients prefer a natural approach to butt enhancement that avoids the use of implants. The BYUN technique emphasizes using the patient’s own tissue and body contouring principles to improve shape and projection.
By reshaping surrounding areas and optimizing volume distribution, it is possible to create a fuller, more lifted appearance while maintaining a natural feel and movement.
The BYUN Approach to Gluteal Shaping and Body Contouring
Dr. Michael BYUN’s approach to butt augmentation focuses on balance, proportion, and long-term aesthetic harmony. Instead of simply increasing size, the technique enhances the entire lower body contour.
This may include targeted fat removal from areas such as the waist, flanks, or lower back to improve waist-to-hip definition. The buttocks are then shaped to create smoother curves and more natural projection.
The goal is not exaggeration, but refined, athletic, and natural-looking enhancement that fits the patient’s frame.
Butt Augmentation vs Implants
Butt augmentation using the BYUN technique differs from implant-based procedures because it focuses on natural tissue shaping rather than artificial volume placement.
Implants provide fixed volume, while the BYUN technique emphasizes proportion, contour, and natural movement using the patient’s own tissue whenever possible. This allows for a softer, more natural result that blends with the body.
